Praise for CBS News and a ‘Hard News’ Edge - TVNewser

via www.mediabistro.com <----------READ THE WHOLE STORY HERE

"....While both NBC and ABC stress lifestyle angles, CBS is focusing more intently on hard news, with its “Evening News” anchor Scott Pelley fulfilling the profile of the more traditional anchor, formal in approach and elocution. Pelley led with news from Syria the same day others led with Whitney Houston....

....He (Jeff Fager) has instructed his news directors to pursue stories they deem important, even if those stories defy audience research...."

It is so good to see CBS News getting some praise for its new approach to news, which is of course nothing new. Classic journalism in the Tiffany Network style is a welcome relief from the pablum and pretentiousness of other televison news offerings. It is not all Cronkite/Murrow, all the time, but it is a great step forward. Thanks Jeff Fager, Scott Pelley and the CBS News team.

Charles Osgood: ‘It Amuses Me When People Are Surprised That We Have Younger Viewers’ - TVNewser

via www.mediabistro.com

By Gail Shister on February 6, 2012 6:01 AM

In case you haven’t noticed lately, “CBS News Sunday Morning” is not just for the dentured set.

"“It amuses me when people are surprised that we have younger viewers,” saysCharles Osgood, 79, the show’s anchor and poet-in-residence. “They said the same thing about ’60 Minutes.’ It’s part of the reason the show is so good.....

....With a median age of 59.8, viewers of “Sunday Morning” are certainly not young, but they are the youngest of the troika, if only by a matter of months. It rankles Osgood to no end that advertisers consider adults 55 and older as the walking dead.

“It’s a mistake to think that people over 54 don’t buy anything and don’t go anywhere,” says Osgood, who succeeded the late, great Charles Kuralt in 1994. “It’s patently untrue, as all of us, including advertisers, are aware...."

To read more about CBS' Sunday Morning, one of my all-time favorite televison programs, see the link to Media Bistro just below Mr. Osgood's image. "Sunday Morning" may be one of the last bastions of quality television.
